Michael G. Kane was named SVP/Local Market Optimization for Gannett in January 2023. He has served in many leadership roles spanning 41 years in the media business and joined Gannett in 1992.
Kane served as President of Gannett’s East Group from 2011- 2018, responsible for 53 media operations in 15 states with over $1B in operating revenue. He also served as President for Gannett’s Midwest Group from 2008 – 2011.
He has served as President & Publisher in three Gannett markets: the Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester, N.Y.; The Indianapolis Star; and the Lansing (Ml) State Journal.
Kane’s management experience includes marketing leadership roles at The Journal News in White Plains, NY, The Poughkeepsie (NY) Journal, The News Journal in Wilmington, DE, and prior to Gannett, The Baltimore Sun. His started his career as a sportswriter in Northern Virginia in 1982.
A Washington, D.C. native, Kane earned a B.A. in Communications/Journalism from Virginia Tech in 1981. He studied at the Sellinger Graduate School of Business at Loyola College in Baltimore from 1988-1991. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from St. John Fisher College in 2007 and an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Nazareth College in 2008.
Kane was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Newspaper Association of America Federations (NAA) in 2007. He is a 7-time winner of Gannett’s President Ring honor for management excellence. Believing strongly in community leadership, he has served on many non-profit boards throughout his long career.
